Notes: James Nimrod Langridge is not strictly in our line of ancestry as he was the younger brother of William Lutener Langridge but I have included him as he was a very interesting character and he and his family carried on the family wheelwright business that had been in the family since the mid 1600s. He was also the great great grandfather of Peter King to whom I am indebted for most of the material contained in this family history. In addition I have since made contact with other family descendants and I am now including detail on James’family.

James was born on 15 Nov 1820 at Danehill and was the youngest son of James and Caroline Langridge. As you will recall his father, James, had inherited the property of Christopher Fields together with the Baptist Chapel from his father, also James. James Nimrod also lived here for many years before building another property in Danehill, that he named Providence Cottage, probably in the mid 1860s. There is a pencil sketch of that property done by a visiting preacher included in the family chart.

Like his father James was also a very strict Baptist and at one stage was living in what is now the Danehill stores but at that time was owned and occupied by members of the Langridge family and was the site of the second chapel. This chapel is now a private home. While living there James would often stand at the front gate next to the chapel and loudly denounce the Anglican congregation as they passed on their way to worship in the village church nearby. He would not allow his daughters to have dolls as he regarded these as graven idols, however the elder girls bought one for their youngest sister and if their father came into the room it would have to be hidden beneath their petticoats or under the voluminous tablecloth.

James married Fanny Kilner, daughter of John Kilner the local blacksmith, and they had a family of six girls and five boys, most with biblical names. It was Fanny who wrote the letter on the next page regarding a visit to our Langridge family at Hollington in 1886 only a few weeks before she died. The uncle mentioned is William Lutener, Carry is Aunt Carline and Luke is mentioned on a couple of occasions.

Like about four generations before him James was a master wheelwright and at various times all his sons were engaged in the business but on his death on 19 Aug 1880 it was taken over by his second son, Enoch who together with his family carried on the business until the advent of the motor vehicle and pneumatic tyres made the trade redundant. The premises are still a motor garage today.
