Notes: In 1881 he is living at home aged thirteen and is a letter carrier for the Post Office. In her letter to Esther of 26 Oct Fanny states that he had left home a few days earlier and from his earlier remarks thought that he “had gone for a soldier”. She did not seem very impressed with this idea but admitted that soldiering might be a better prospect than continuing to associate with the company he had recently been keeping. This proved to be correct and in 1891 he is shown as a private soldier in the 1st Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment in barracks at Fulwood in Lancashire. By 1901 he has left the army and is married to an Irish lady named Catherine. He is listed as a County Asylum attendant and they are living at 5 Infirmary Terrace, Chichester
