Notes: James, usually shown as Gaius in census records, was born at Danehill on 22 Nov 1848 and followed his father into the traditional family trade of wheelwright working in the family business until his marriage. In 1871 he is a journeyman wheelwright working and living at home. He married Margaret Finch at Horsted Keynes on 13 Aug 1871 and in 1881 they are shown as living at West Horsted Green. As all their children were born at HK it appears that they must have set up home there immediately after their marriage. It is here that his trade is first shown as carpenter as it is from this point on. In 1891 they are still at HK but have moved to 4 Lindfield Rd. In 1901 the family are at 4 College Rd Lindfield. Peter King advised me that he later lived at Haywards Heath. James died on 16 Jan 1922 at Cuckfield.

A story is told about James Gaius involving his uncle William Lutener Langridge Snr who had lost his eldest son, also William Lutener, in 1884. As James’ wife was expecting another baby at the time he offered James a pound to name the baby William Lutener if it was a boy. It was and he accepted the payment.
