Notes: In 1861 on the night of the census Caroline L is shown a s working at 17 Clarendon Sq (Beer House) as a servant age d 13 The 1871 census shows a George Roberts aged 2 visiting wit h his grandfather having been born in Eastbourne. no trac e of his birth in the GRO Indexes for 1867-1870 The child must be a son of either Jane or Caroline, Jane w as married in 1865 to Samuel a search of the GRO indexes do es not show any Roberts marrying a Waugh. The 1871 census shows a Walter Roberts living at 25 South S treet Eastbourne, a master baker his wife is Caroline S aged 23 ie 1848, whilst the second i ntial is wrong for caroline, his wife is the corrrect age a nd her place of birth is St Pancras, they have a child Robe rt born 3rd Qtr 1870 Eastbourne 2b 64, a copy of his birt h certificate has been ordered and this will shows his moth er maiden name. The certificate shows the mother maiden nam e as Waugh, however it shows the mother christian name a s Sophia, all the other details tie in i e father Walter Ro berts Master Baker . There is no trace of the family in th e 1881-1891, but their son Walter G aged 1 in 1871 appaer s in the 1901 in Islington married. There is also a marriage for a Sophia Waugh in the 3rd Qt r 1868 to a Walter Roberts in St Pancras, the father of Sop hia is William Waugh, so It may be that somewhere along th e line the names have been transcribed incorrectly, there is not trac e of a Sophia Waugh being born in St Pancras in 1846/7/8, s o it seemks reasonable to assume, that as no marriage or de ath can be found for Caroline, that Caroline and Sophia ar e one and the same, and perhaps her family name was Carolin e. Caroline appears in the 1871 Census living with her Husban d Walter Roberts and children at 25 South Street Eastbourn e aged 23 born in St Pancras
