William Lutener’s eldest son was also named William Lutener and was born on 1 Sep 1837 at Fletching. The 1841 census shows him with his parents at Danehill and 1n 1851 he is with the family at Chelwood Common where his father was farming. The family moved to Hollington in 1854 when his father took up the appointment of parish clerk and in 1861 the family are all living at Rock Cottage where William and his brothers Luke and James are all shown as joiners by occupation. The family were probably initially brought up as Baptists but William was baptised into the Chuch of England at the Church in the Wood on 8 May 1859 aged 22 with his occupation shown as a carpenter. There is mention of him in the parish records in relation to the rebuilding of the church in the late 1850s and also to do with other building contracts in later years.

I have not managed to locate a record of his marriage but his wife’s name was Sarah Ann from Hastings and they were probably married in the mid 1860s. Hollington baptism records for his family show him as a builder of Alma Terrace, St Mary’s in the Castle, Hastings and the 1881 census shows him as a builder of Silverhill, St Leonards.

Tragedy was to strike this family as they all died young. The eldest son William Lutener (again) died in Sep 1867 aged two months, Mary Jane died in Nov 1878 aged ten and the youngest, Henry Farncombe passed away in Jun 1871 aged nine months. William died on 7 Feb 1884 aged forty six and Sarah on 19 Nov 1890 at the age of fifty. The whole family are buried together at the Church in the Wood
